So the Vice President of the schoolboard in Grand Rapids, MI decided to climb over the railing on a cliff to take a better picture, despite warnings from signs and just good sense. Really, this kind of Darwin Award winning common sense is shaping our future...

CNN Article

Sinking

The last surviver of the Titanic sinking in the US died over the weekend. Only two survivors are left, both in England. Lillian Asplundt was 5 when the boat sank, the other two survivors were too young at the time to remember anything. So this makes her the last eye witness to the sinking capable of giving an account of what happened. In 6 years we will see the centenial of the Titanic so brace yourself for every movie ever made about it spamming the networks.

I prefer the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald myself.

Whats your favorite maritime tragendy?

Feds Google Us - No time to absorb this right now, will update later today.

See what happens when you re-elect a war mongoring President. Would need to research this, but way back it was predicted that Iran could be next, and denied by the administration. And as Bush has shown, the tough talk often starts after we are ready to swing the big stick.

How very sad.

And right after Disney killed Christopher Robin, which in itself is worthy of boycotting Disney.

PRIS

P.R.I.S. is the name of the system I have been developing. It stands for Production Reporting Information system and is a play on the name H.R.I.S. (Human Resources...) which we also have developed and use in house. I thought of calling it the W.H.I.S. after myself (Wes Howard I.S.) but then say whis out loud and you will see why I didn't.

Yesterday I gave a Power Point presentation to one of the company owners and he is very excited by it all. He asked me to set up a session with our web meeting provider today and give the presentation to the other company owner and some company officers in other locations.

After it was all done a member of management could only focus on the Power Point presentation itself. It was a tad flashy. I have done presentations before, and used PP a little, but I really went nutty with the transitions and stuff this time to generate some excitement over the material itself. I think in doing so I inadvertently volunteered to help revamp the presentations used in training.

Some blatant bragging and explanation of what this is all about behind the cut

Pardon the bragging for a moment, but it is in the end days of completion. Beta testing is in progress. I will review the results and retool any changes over christmas break and it will be the new system for reporting and accounting for the production of up top 200 and later next year 250 salesmen.

Well I built the whole thing from scratch - Back-end server components, and front end application. It took 6 months or so of tearing apart existing reports, methods, work processes, and dissecting the jobs of several supervisors and administrators in addition to the actual technical work of writing the programs.

It is very exciting to do something so big, not only will there be a savings in labor on the front end, but a reduction in the labor on the back end as daily, weekly, and monthly reports take less time justify. As it is now there is actually a person on both ends that may spend hours a day or even a full day trying to figure out mistakes and why their reports don't match. But labor isn't always a realized savings. You spend the same amount in payroll because they do other things with their time. Hopefully more productive things.

The real savings will be reduction in the physical materials - Paper, Toner, and even long distance fax charges. I am hoping to see a 40% reduction in consumption of these materials which is real money we have gotten back from this process.

Sorry if my last post was a little harsh, and Matt makes some good points about choosing battles. But the battle I choose is ignorance. I don't mean for everyone to know the specifics of every issue in current events, but at least take some time to know what the events are and to get some summary information of the big ones. Right now the US is breaking or nearly breaking some international laws. This makes our government criminal in the world sense. Since we have the ability to choose our leaders we should be aware of what the major players in this morrass are up to now so we are not fooled by election hype and spin doctoring later when the inevitable happens.

Toture

The US has a tarnished image in the world community. We have invaded another country and been very pushy and imperialistic over the past decade or so in other areas. What puzzles me is now it looks like we are as guilty of some of the evils we have been using as an excuse to wage our war.

Last year the issue was that we were not allowing detainees in Gitmo access to legal counsel and Bush flat out refused at one point to give the Red Cross access to the prisoneers to check that they were being treated humanely. Stories slipped out into the media periodically that we were holding juveniles or that someones family wanted to know what happened to their husband or son that vanished into the Gitmo camp.

All is well we were told. Not many of us believed it, not all of us tolerated it, and not any of us could really do anything about it. I still am very uneasy about the whole thing. In all reality this is the sort of thing we should be facing UN sanctions for, or perhaps having 'peacekeeping' forces comming over and forcing us to disclose our dirty little secrets. Any other country would be dealt with in this way if they did this.

Now, Condi Rice has admitted that prisoners in terror related matters are flown out of the country. They are not flown to places where torture is legal as everyone claims. Secret prisons run by the CIA where we do not even acknowledge their existence, let alone make it public record who we are holding and why and for how long. No due process applies.

I cannot even think of how to convince anyone reading this of how bad this is getting. I see people on my friends list railing about personal matters, writting page after page about their tortured emotions. Stop creating monumental issues out of everything, put aside the drama for a moment and really look at world and current events. Sure we all know Bush is horrible, but damnit understand the why of it all and know who else is involved. You will have a chance to vote next time and you need to know now the kind of things the people likely to surface as candidates are up to.

How many of you know what the term 'Redention Flight' is? Is the US breaking International Law? What should be done?

Read these two articles please, in fact read the news every day, but if your totured love lives prevents it, at least read the stuff I post here between your soliloqueys and laments.

article 1 and article 2

Bar Code Magic

In researching a project I want to develope I have been studying bar codes. This morning I found this in my news net, a 19 year old man in Denver was printing bar codes for a $4.99 set of earphones and sticking it onto a $150 iPod and then going to the register. Aparently this was a dubplication of a scam that defrauded $1.5 million from Wal-Mart a while back.

Really he should have been a bit more conservative in his discounting. Greed will always get you in trouble.

News Depression

Leading the things in the news that made me shake my head Congressman Admits taking Bribes. $2 million dollars in bribes from defense contractors! Jesus Christ on a Crutch!

Aparently experts are surprised by the results of a study on problems in Youth Sports - SI.com article and Actual Press Release

And for the many of you that never click on the links I post a summary of the juicy stuff -

Among the young athletes who participated in the study, key findings include:

• Nearly one out of every 10 acknowledged cheating
• 13 percent admitted to having tried to hurt an opponent
• 31 percent indicated they had argued with a sport official
• 13 percent reported they had made fun of a less-skilled teammate
• 27 percent reported they had acted like "bad sports"

Many young athletes did not show remorse for these behaviors. For example, 14 percent believe that cheating is an acceptable behavior, and 32 percent consider arguing with officials part of the game.

Proponents of youth sports will be encouraged by two findings: Most participants enjoy their experience, and most parents believe their coaches are doing a good job.

Bredemeier noted that parents revealed some problematic behavior. For example, 13 percent of parents acknowledged having angrily criticized their child's performance.

"Fortunately, no parents reported having encouraged their child to hurt an opponent, although a few apparently counseled 'getting back' at an opponent who played dirty," Bredemeier said.

Coaches also acknowledged encouraging athletes to hurt an opponent (8 percent) and to cheat (7 percent).

"Even more disturbing is the number of coaches whose behavior fosters unhealthy climates," Bredemeier said.

More than one-third of coaches surveyed admitted to yelling at players for making mistakes, and 20 percent of the coaches have made fun of a team member.

Also troubling is the fact that 4 percent of young athletes said their coach had hit, kicked or slapped them, Shields said.

"If our sample is representative of the larger youth sport population, this finding would suggest that there are nearly 2 million kids being physically abused by their coaches each year," he said.

Amazing they needed a study to show this. Who reading this could not have guessed these findings based on their own experiences with PE in school?

Funny Walking Lemurs

Full Story

"A new species of wooly lemur has been named in honour of John Cleese in recognition of his work to protect lemurs in general. According to the article, the lemurs don't walk, per se, but have known to do some very silly walks. Good show." From the article: "The avahi cleesei, which weights less than two pounds and eats leaves, was discovered in Western Madagascar in 1990 by a team led by anthropologist Urs Thalmann and his colleague Thomas Geissman of Zurich University."

German Parenthood

Found this very amusing. It was in a friends private journal so I am reposting the link here for those that are not mutual.

German Baby Making Oh yeah, don't look at this at work. It may be a kids book, but could probly still get you in trouble.

Would be funny to have someone translate the german so you could read the explanations.

"Sedative Spitting TransvestitesMembers of a Thai transvestite gang have confessed to hiding strong sedatives in their mouths and spitting them down the throats of victims during deep kissing. Then they rob the drugged tourists."

A police lieutenant colonel has this warning for tourists: "Don't rush to kiss a stranger on the mouth or you will end up in a deep sleep."

So what is this doing to this companies</> business?

Spear Hunting

Atlatl (AT-lad-ul)

Apparently using this is a sport and soon to be legal in Pennsylvania as an option for deer hunting. It is a wooden stick with a hook used as a launcher for a small spear. Apparently quite deadly.

Speaking of spears, apparently they are legal during deer season in Alabama... who knew?

Addiction

"A nursing assistant pleaded guilty on Thursday to sucking medication from a patient's pain patch.... Oglesbee admitted to removing a 72-hour pain patch from a nursing home resident and sucking out the medication"

It's like a more fucked up version of the alchoholic sipping beer from the ash trays in a bar.

And I forgot to post this on the 12th but happy 69th birthday chuck. If being born to a 16 year old protitute can't stop you from becoming a household name, then I know that I can do anything I set my mind to. You are an inspiration to us all.
